Victoria FitzGerald is an oil abstract artist exploring textural bases to start the painting process. Living in Wyndham Vale, Victoria works full time in Administration but finds time out of hours to paint. Victoria attended Gordon Tafe in Geelong to start at Diploma and Degree in Fine Art but the high costs associated with the degree was the catalyst to change ‘careers’. She has been painting since 2013 after a 5-year break.
Victoria has been experimenting to find her style since 2013; starting with watercolours, moving to acrylic on paper and then into what she is currently using – oil on canvas.
I have always felt drawn to the relationship between light and dark; the idea that the eyes can be calmed or excited by the placement of the tones and highlights excites me and is what I am trying to study and portray. Dark colours are fascinating to me as they feel like they have more complexity to be interpreted.
I try and create a sense of movement and depth through the textures and sweeping brushstrokes. A textured base is a starting point, dark colours are painted first and then areas of highlights are incorporated to create a blended and pleasing end painting.
